Health & Safety Legislation means that you must protect your employees
As an employer, you are faced with ever increasing government legislation regarding the safety and welfare of your employees. Failure to comply with current legislation can result in heavy fines or even the closure of your commercial buildings or sites. So it pays to keep up to date and make sure that you are fulfilling your obligations as an employer.
One of the problems faced by many smaller businesses is knowing what it is that you need to be doing. Here at MacDonald Martin we are up to speed on all the current requirements and offer various courses to help you keep your company up to date.
Fire safety training
Not only must you do a fire risk analysis of all your buildings but depending on what happens in your premises you may need appropriately trained staff to deal with any potential fires. From basic fire awareness to fully qualified Fire Wardens we can train your staff to the right level and with the minimum disruption to your work schedules.
All of our fire safety training includes live fire – this means that all of your staff will have the opportunity to extinguish fires using a variety of extinguishers (should they wish to do so). The benefits of this live training include:
- Possible mitigation of damage to property
- Business continuity
- Legal compliance - all businesses must "take all reasonable steps to mitigate the effects of fire" - this also has implications for environmental issues
- Protection for the employer from litigation claims (if employees were injured attempting to fight a fire, they could not claim that they had not received the appropriate level of instruction)
First Aid
The HSE require all businesses to have First Aid available. The number of employees has a direct effect on whether your company will need First Aiders who are certified as competent and how many of your staff will need to be trained as First Aiders. The First Aid at Work course now takes three days and your First Aiders will need refresher courses, the current recommendation is annually, to keep their qualifications up to date.
Depending on the circumstances (number of employees etc), you may be able to have staff trained in Emergency First Aid (formally known as Appointed Person) – this course lasts for one day and should be refreshed annually.
Abrasive Wheel training
brasive wheels can be dangerous in the hands of an unskilled, untrained operative so it makes sense that the employer is required to make sure that all operatives have the right training. But this has to be given by someone who is certified not simply by someone who is experienced.
The course for trainers is only half a day long and we can provide it anywhere that has power and seating. This means that it can generally be done at your premises and causes only minimum down time. Once you have operatives that are certified then they can train anyone that needs to use the equipment.
Health and Safety at work
Regardless of what your business does all your staff need to be shown how to work safely within their working environment. For instance, if they are required to lift anything over a certain weight then they must be taught how to do it correctly. If you use dangerous equipment or chemicals then all employees must be taught how to deal with them.
Here at Macdonald Martin we have safety courses that can help protect your business by protecting your employees.
We are a CIEH approved training centre, and offer the following courses:
- CIEH 1 day Health and Safety awareness (nationally recognised qualification)
