Fire Risk Assessments

An essential part of anyones fire safety plans - fire risk assessments carried out correctly can help identify all possible risks of combustion and methods put in place to counteract these risks.

The new Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRFSO) came into force on 1st October 2006.

The order applies in England and Wales (Northern Ireland and Scotland have their own laws). It covers 'general fire precautions' and other fire safety duties which are needed to protect 'relevant persons' in case of fire in and around most 'premises'. The order requires fire protection to be put in place "where necessary" and to the extent that it is reasonable and practicable in the circumstances of the case.

The order firmly places a responsibility on anyone who has control of premises or anyone who has a degree of control over certain areas or systems (a "Responsible Person" ) and outlines all the measures that must be taken to ensure the safety of all the people he/she is either directly or indirectly responsible for. The "Responsible Person" is required to ensure the completion of a Fire Risk Assessment and to take suitable steps to remove or reduce fire hazards.

Although the "Responsible Person" may carry out the fire risk assessment, they can also pass this task to some other competent person.
